The old phrase “the early bird catches the worm” might ring even more true for Florida property owners starting this year.
On December 2, 2021, Senator Ana Rodriguez (R-39) filed Senate Bill 1152 to increase tax percentage deductions on timely paid property tax bills. An identical bill was filed in the Florida House of Representatives by Representative Jason Fischer (R-16).
If enacted, this new bill would offer discounts on property tax bills of up to 2% from current discount rates. Notices paid in November would be eligible for 6% discount, December payments would see a 5% discount, January and February payments would receive 4% and 3% discounts respectively, and bills paid in the first ten days of March would receive a 1% discount.
While only in its initial stages, similar tax relief has moved quickly through the Legislature during previous election years. The bill would need majority approval to pass its assigned committee, the Florida Senate and Florida House before reaching Governor DeSantis’s desk. If signed, the bill’s tax percentage deductions would take effect for the 2022 tax year.
